Kakamega High School’s Green Commandos have ended Musingu High School’s reign as Western Region secondary school boys football champions, edging out their arch-rivals 2-0 in extra time after the two giants played to a goalless draw in normal time.
The final, played on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at Masinde Muliro Stadium in Kanduyi, Bungoma County, drew a capacity crowd eager to witness the crowning of the region’s top secondary school side for the year. The tightly contested match remained scoreless through regulation time before Kakamega High broke Musingu’s resistance with a two-goal salvo in extra time to seal the title.
The victory guarantees Kakamega High School a slot at the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) national games in the second term, which will be held at the M-Pesa Foundation Academy in Thika, where regional champions from across the country will battle for the national crown.
The final attracted several prominent leaders, among them National Assembly Speaker and Ford Kenya party leader Moses Masika Wetangula and Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka. Supporters spilt over into the VIP section set aside for the dignitaries as the stadium filled.
Speaking after the match, Governor Lusaka said the quality of football on display had reaffirmed the region’s reputation as a breeding ground for talent. “The victory and thrilling football we have witnessed today cements Western Kenya’s position as a cradle of football talent in the country,” he said.
Lusaka also lauded the national government for partnering with county governments to invest in sports infrastructure, saying such collaboration was laying the groundwork for nurturing young talent. “The completion of modern sporting facilities will provide young people with opportunities to develop their abilities and pursue their talents in sports,” he added.
