The Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) has received national recognition after emerging as the Most Improved State Corporation in the 2024/25 Financial Year and securing third position in the State Corporations Performance Category during the National Productivity and Performance Conference 2026.

The achievement was marked by the award of a Certificate of Excellence in Performance presented by the Government of Kenya.

The award recognises KISE’s remarkable progress in institutional performance, service delivery and its contribution to advancing special needs education and inclusive learning across the country.

The recognition places the institute among the country’s best-performing public institutions.

According to the certificate issued under the State Department for National Government Coordination, KISE attained first position in the State Corporations Best Improved Performance Category during the 2024/25 Financial Year.

The certificate was presented on June 19, 2026, during the National Productivity and Performance Conference.

The award comes at a time when the government is placing greater emphasis on accountability, productivity and results-based management across public institutions.

State corporations are evaluated on key performance indicators, including financial management, service delivery, governance, innovation and implementation of government priorities.

KISE’s improved ranking reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen special needs education services, enhance teacher training, expand assessment and rehabilitation programmes, and support the implementation of inclusive education policies.

Education stakeholders have welcomed the recognition, noting that institutions serving learners with disabilities are increasingly receiving attention within the national education agenda.

Championing Inclusive Education

Established in 1986, KISE is Kenya’s leading institution mandated to promote education, training, assessment, rehabilitation and research for persons with disabilities and special educational needs.

The institute works closely with the Ministry of Education, learning institutions, teachers, parents and development partners to improve access to quality and inclusive education.

Over the years, KISE has played a key role in training teachers in special needs education, conducting educational assessments, producing learning materials and supporting government efforts to ensure that no learner is left behind.

The institute has also been at the forefront of implementing policies aligned with the Constitution of Kenya, the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and international commitments on inclusive education.

The National Productivity and Performance Conference brings together government agencies, state corporations, county governments and other public institutions to review performance, share best practices and celebrate excellence in public service delivery.
