MPs raise Sh2 million to support needy students

National Assembly Speaker Dr. Moses Wetang’ula hands over a Sh2 million bursary cheque contributed by Members of Parliament to support needy and deserving students of Thika High School at the Parliament Buildings on June 2, 2026.

On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr. Moses Wetang’ula, officially presented a bursary cheque worth Sh2 million, donated by Members of Parliament, to assist financially challenged and deserving students of Thika High School.

The handover took place at the Parliament Buildings, where the Speaker received the school’s Chief Principal alongside the student president and two deputy student leaders. While at Parliament, the students were also given an opportunity to follow proceedings from the National Assembly public gallery.

The bursary allocation is intended to support students in Grade 10, Form 3 and Form 4, helping to reduce financial challenges that may hinder their education and ensuring continued access to learning opportunities.

Fulfilled pledge

The MPs’ donation, described as a contribution from “friends of the school,” fulfilled a pledge made during Thika High School’s 70th anniversary celebrations on 15th May 2026. The event was attended by President William Ruto.

At the anniversary celebrations, lawmakers pledged a total of Sh12 million. Of this amount, Sh10 million was set aside for infrastructure projects, while Sh2 million was allocated to bursaries. The infrastructure funds are expected to be managed through the school’s Old Boys Association Fund to facilitate development initiatives.

Speaking during the occasion, Speaker Wetang’ula praised the programme, saying it demonstrated Parliament’s dedication to advancing education and supporting the growth of future generations of leaders.

Clerk of the National Assembly

He further pointed out that one of Thika High School’s distinguished former students currently serves as the Clerk of the National Assembly, urging learners to value and uphold the institution’s rich heritage.

The Speaker encouraged the students to maintain discipline, remain focused on their studies and strive for academic excellence, noting that education continues to be a key instrument for personal and societal transformation.

The students thanked Parliament for the visit and the opportunity to witness legislative proceedings firsthand, describing the experience as both educational and inspiring.
