The Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) portal is set for stricter enforcement across in the Western region ahead of upcoming championships, following growing concerns over compliance gaps in team registration.

Education and quality assurance officials have issued a firm directive warning that schools failing to meet minimum portal requirements will not be allowed to participate in county-level competitions.

The warning was delivered during a recent sub-county secretaries’ meeting held in Kakamega, where regional director of education (RDE) and Regional Quality Assurance and Standards Officers (QASO) emphasized that adherence to the digital registration system is now non-negotiable.

Sub-county chairpersons were also cautioned against presenting teams that are not fully compliant, with officials linking the crackdown to controversies witnessed in previous competitions, including a high-profile case involving Bungoma High School during last season’s National 15s Rugby championships.

With Sub-county championships set to begin this weekend, the new enforcement measures are already reshaping participation, with several schools and teams being expunged from fixtures after failing to meet registration standards on the KSSSA portal.

In Lugari Sub-county, multiple teams have been ruled out of competition.

Mautuma boys have been excluded from boys’ soccer, while St. Cecilia Secondary has lost representation in soccer girls, volleyball girls and volleyball boys’ categories.

Munyuki Secondary has also been affected, with its volleyball boys’ team disqualified due to incomplete registration records.

The situation is equally tense in Mumias West sub-county, where a wide range of schools have been struck off the competition list.

In soccer, Buchifi Secondary, Ichinga Muslim, St. Elizabeth Bumia Girls, Mumias Academy and Milimani secondary will not participate.

Mumias Academy has further been disqualified from volleyball boys’ and girls’ categories after being found to have no registered players in the system.

Other affected schools in volleyball girls include Lureko Girls and Musanda Secondary, while netball teams from Sheikh Badru, Matawa Secondary, Bumia Girls and St. Joseph Shibale were also excluded due to incomplete squads.

In Navakholo sub-county, the enforcement has been even more severe, with only two teams cleared for the North Zone Boys soccer championship.

Ingotse Secondary and Lwakhupa Secondary are the only schools that met all compliance requirements and were approved to proceed.

Officials indicate that the crackdown is part of a broader effort to streamline school sports administration, eliminate irregular entries and ensure fairness in competition.

However, the development has sparked concern among some schools that are now racing against time to rectify registration gaps before subsequent stages of competition.
