Parents of Nyakeore Secondary School in Nyamatuta Ward, West Mugirango Constituency, have attributed the good performance in national examinations among schools in the area to cooperation from the community and goodwill from leaders.
The jubilant parents were speaking at the school on Tuesday during a consultative meeting. They noted that open communication between teachers, parents, and local leaders had created a shared sense of responsibility for students’ progress.
Former school BoM chairman William Mose stated that a calm environment plays a key role in the success of any school. When learners feel safe and free from unnecessary tension, they concentrate better in class, participate actively, and retain what they are taught. A peaceful setting also encourages teachers to focus on instruction rather than managing conflicts, and it builds trust between the school and the surrounding community.
The principal of the school, Charles Maosa, highlighted the strategies he has put in place to sustain the good name of the school, including maintaining discipline among students and teachers. He added that academic excellence is also supported by regular assessment and feedback, consistent teacher preparation, targeted remedial classes for struggling learners, and close monitoring of syllabus coverage. Involving parents in tracking student progress, using data to identify gaps, and creating a culture of reading and discussion further strengthen results.
The principal poured accolades on his deputy, Maxwell Keragita, whom he described as the pillar of the school who encourages other teachers to work as a team. He said that through his coordination and teamwork, the school shines in extra-curricular activities such as music and drama.

The principal cited a few challenges, such as overstretched classrooms due to the ever-increasing student enrolment, but remained sanguine about overcoming them because of goodwill from the area MP’s office and the Ministry of Education.
