Emurua Dikirr constituency returning officer Caleb Gekonde has announced that all schools within the Constituency will remain closed on May 14 to pave way for the smooth conduct of the parliamentary by-election.

Speaking ahead of the poll, Gekonde said about 98 percent of public primary schools in the constituency have been designated as polling stations, making it difficult for learning activities to continue during the exercise.

He noted that the temporary closure was necessary to ensure the safety of learners, teachers, election officials and voters during the by-election period.

Gekonde further assured residents that adequate security arrangements had been put in place across the constituency to guarantee a peaceful, free, and credible election.

He urged voters to maintain peace before, during and after the election, warning against any form of violence or disruption at polling centres.

The seat fell vacant following the death of former Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ngeno, who died alongside five other people in a helicopter crash at Chepkiep village in Mosop Sub-county, Nandi County, on February 28.

Four candidates are contesting for the parliamentary seat. They include David Keter of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), Vincent Rotich of the Democratic Citizen Party (DCP), Desma Cherono of PNU, and Gideon Koech of the National Vision Party (NVP).

The by-election is expected to attract heavy political attention within Narok County and the larger South Rift region.
