At least 120 senior school teachers in Kericho County have undergone training on integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into classroom teaching.

The move aims at strengthening delivery under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system.

The three-day training, conducted by the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA), focused on equipping teachers with practical AI skills to align emerging technologies with modern teaching methods.

Speaking during the closing ceremony at Moi Tea Girls Secondary School, Kericho County Quality Assurance Officer Joseph Ochieng underscored the need for educators to embrace digital tools to improve learning outcomes and prepare students for a technology-driven future.

“Teachers must embrace digital tools to enhance learning and prepare our learners for the future,” said Ochieng. “I urge those trained to cascade this knowledge to their colleagues and ensure Artificial Intelligence is integrated effectively in teaching under the CBE curriculum.”

He noted that the transition from the 8-4-4 system to CBE requires a shift in teaching approaches, with technology playing a central role.

CEMASTEA National Trainer Martin Mungai said the programme seeks to ensure teachers are not left behind as learners become increasingly digitally literate.

“The training introduced teachers to AI applications in education and how they can be used to enrich classroom experiences and improve content delivery,” he said.

Mungai added that participants were taken through hands-on sessions using generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, DeepSeek, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini and Edu-Aid.

“By the end of the training, teachers will be able to navigate the CEMASTEA portal, understand the basics of Artificial Intelligence, develop hands-on activities using AI tools, enhance learner-centred teaching in CBC lessons, and promote responsible use of AI,” Mungai said.

He explained that the tools will assist teachers in lesson preparation, content curation and improving learner engagement in line with 21st-century skills.

The trainer further revealed that the programme targets at least 400 senior school teachers in Kericho County, who will in turn cascade the knowledge to their colleagues.

On infrastructure challenges, Mungai said efforts are underway to improve internet connectivity in schools through partnerships, including the adoption of satellite internet solutions such as Starlink.

Teachers were also encouraged to utilise personal digital devices as an interim solution as broader infrastructure development continues.

CEMASTEA educationist Richard Jakomanyo clarified that AI is not intended to replace teachers but to complement their role in the classroom.

“Effective teaching still depends on the teacher’s pedagogical knowledge and ability to guide learners in the appropriate use of technology,” he said.

Jakomanyo noted that the training is part of a nationwide initiative currently being implemented in 17 counties, with plans to expand to more regions in subsequent phases.

Stakeholders expressed optimism that the programme will enhance curriculum delivery and equip learners with relevant competencies needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital world.
