Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has dismissed allegations that it awarded degrees to individuals who were never admitted or studied at the institution.
According to a circular signed by Prof. Hussein S. A. Golicha, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs, the university insisted that its graduation processes are strictly governed by statutes and academic standards.
The circular stated: “All students who graduate from this University apply, get admitted, register, go through their chosen courses and only graduate once they have satisfied the Examiners and Senate.”

It further emphasized that students who qualify for graduation are duly processed through the approval mechanisms provided for in the university statutes. The statement also clarified the role of distance learning:
“The University has Open and Distance Learning where students take classes from the comfort of their area of operation/homes away from the university, and are processed for graduation only when they meet the requirements.” Read part of the circular.
The university strongly rejected the allegations made by a local politician during a radio interview on March 31, 2026, describing them as baseless. “We strongly disagree with such unverified claims which have unfairly tainted the image of our institution,” the circular read.
Reaffirming its commitment, MMUST concluded: “Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) remains committed to its academic calling and focused in pursuit of academic excellence.”
