- Parents have been urged to monitor the time children spend on mobile phones and the content they access.
- Makueni Assembly Speaker Douglas Mbilu warned that failure to supervise children’s gadget use could have long-term consequences.
- He also encouraged parents to mentor their children and allow teachers adequate time to guide them academically.
Speaker of the Makueni County Assembly Douglas Mbilu has called upon parents to control the time children spend on their gadgets and monitor the content they watch on mobile phones.
Speaking at Kivandini Primary School during its prize-giving day, Mbilu cautioned parents that if they fail to manage their children now, they may regret it later.
“The young ones know our phones better than we do. There is adult content in those apps that you have not locked. In fact, as much as you want to keep them busy with your phones, let them put the volume high so that you can hear what they are watching in case you are not looking at the screen. Remember to lock most apps,” Mbilu said.
The Speaker called upon schools to make use of alumni in their boards of management, encouraging former students to serve whenever called upon as a way of giving back to society and inspiring learners.
“It will be easier for children to relate with you and feel encouraged as well,” he added.
He also urged parents to give teachers adequate time to work with their children, noting that teachers are better placed to understand learners’ academic abilities.
Mentoring
On the other hand, he encouraged parents to create quality time with their children at home and become their greatest mentors.

To the learners, he congratulated those who received awards and encouraged those who did not to continue working hard, assuring them that their time to shine would come.
