Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi has urged the National Government to address the lecturers’ strike, which has crippled learning in public universities.
Speaking at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Cathedral in Machakos Town on Saturday, September 27, 2025, Mwangangi said university students had now gone for weeks without learning despite parents incurring heavy expenses to keep them on campus.
He blamed President William Ruto and some Cabinet Secretaries for spending much time engaging in politics while critical areas such as Education and Health faced major challenges.
“Our students in Universities have suffered for a long time due to the ongoing lecturers’ strike. I ask President Ruto and the National government not to kill education the way they are killing devolution because education is the only hope remaining for the future of our nation,” said Mr Mwangangi.

Mr Mwangangi singled out Labour Cabinet Secretary Dr Alfred Mutua, who on Thursday criticised the County government of Machakos for charging fees at public toilets that he had built while serving as the Governor of Machakos.
Mwangangi said the toilets had created employment for youths who were initially living on the streets and were now charging a small user fee to maintain the toilets’ cleanliness.
The Deputy Governor said Dr Mutua had numerous challenges to address at the national level and should refrain from interfering with County affairs.
The lecturers’ strike, due to unfulfilled demands, is a labour issue that falls on the docket of Dr Mutua.
