Drama as striking Kirinyaga University lecturers chased away from college

Kirinyaga University DVC Dr. Charles Omwandho (in brown shirt) confronts striking lecturers.

Kirinyaga University dons were today chased away from the institution’s compound by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC) as they joined in the nationwide lecturers’ strike to push the government to effect the 2017-2021 CBA.

The DVC, Academics, Dr. Charles Omwandho, chased them away saying they were supposed to be in class and not in the streets.

The lecturers had started a peaceful procession from the lecture halls towards the gate when Dr. Omwandho appeared and confronted them, dragging the dons who were holding the banner outside before forcing security guards to close the gate and instructing them not to allow them back.

The 150 dons from the university, led by UASU Chairman Dr. Robert Gitau, said that since negotiations had failed, there had no other avenue to air their grievances but to strike.

“We are in solidarity with other dons, the strike is our constitutional right. Our DVC trying to intimidate us is very wrong,” he said.

“We are forcing the government to effect the 2017-2021 CBA since it has overstayed. If the government doesn’t work on it this year, come next year the government will not even listen to us since time will have lapsed,” UASU Secretary General Dr. Lucas Macharia said.

Last week, the dons complained how the institution was mistreating them after it failed to listen to their grievances.

The dons also complained that the institution also had arrears dating back to four years.
