Burning issues as Principals start annual conference in Mombasa

Principals are eagerly waiting for Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu who is expected to address them regarding pressing issues affecting operations in schools during the official opening of the 46th Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) Conference which started on Tuesday at Sheikh Zeyad Hall in Mombasa.

KESSHA National Chairman and Machakos Boys Principal Kahi Indimuli stated that they are expecting the Ministry to address the funding deficit affecting public secondary schools under the Free Day Secondary Education (FDSE) programme and also get guidance on preparation for transition to Senior Secondary Schools under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Indimuli said that they are also expecting to offer proposals and recommendations on how best county and national governments can support schools on health and safety issues for both teachers and students considering recent developments that saw a number of students lose their lives in schools over contaminated water and food.

The Principals are also expecting to receive guidance on the criteria to be used for scholarship provision and which roles they will play over the same, citing cases where students benefit from more than one scholarship programme such as the NG-CDF.

He added that other issues to be deliberated upon include the role of technology to supplement education especially during pandemics, and how best schools can be integrated to accommodate students with special needs.

Embu University Dean Prof. Ciriaka Gitonga urged the school heads to collaborate with universities to ensure that students who are on teaching practice in their respective schools are assessed correctly to strengthen teaching practice.

The Conference will enter its second day tomorrow, June 28, where it will be officially opened by CS Machogu, with Basic Education Principal Secretary (PS) Dr. Belio Kipsang’ and TSC Chairperson Dr. Jamleck Muturi also expected to address the participants.
