The Kisumu County government’s Technical and Vocational Training department intends to launch short courses for artisans in the informal sector.

County director for TVETs Pascalia Ouko said the programme is aimed at making the institutions more popular and agreeable to the sector.

Ouko, who was speaking during a peace building forum in Kisumu, said that the courses will be tailor-made to conform to trends in the sector.

The director said many people in the informal sector are busy and cannot attend regular classes hence the anticipated programme.

He said the TVET sector has grown tremendously in Kisumu with the number of learners increasing 3,000 to over 5,000 students.

Ouko said they are trying to make TVET institutions friendly to people with disabilities.

She encouraged more youth to join technical institutions in order to boost their skills as the county government was keen on promoting the sector.
