A significant milestone in the advancement of early childhood education was achieved in Marich Pass following the commissioning of a new ECDE classroom at RCEA Marich Pass ECDE Primary and Junior School.

The event, presided over by West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin, underscored the county government’s renewed focus on strengthening foundational education and accelerating infrastructure development across the region.

Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Kachapin described the new classroom as a symbol of dignity, equity and renewed hope for young learners who have endured difficult learning conditions for years. “For a long time, our children here have studied under trees because of inadequate facilities. That reality does not reflect the value we place on education. Since the school was established in 2016, enrollment has steadily grown, a clear sign that this community believes in educating its children.

As a county government, we are committed to matching that determination with tangible investment. We will continue constructing more ECDE classrooms to reduce congestion and ensure every child learns in a safe and conducive environment. I also urge parents and guardians to prioritise education and avoid involving young children in gold mining activities. Mining is an important source of livelihood, but it must be conducted responsibly and in accordance with the law. Our children belong in school, building their future,” the Governor said.

The commissioning ceremony attracted education officials, local leaders, parents and members of the surrounding community, all of whom witnessed what many described as a long-awaited intervention.

For years, learners at the institution had been forced to endure harsh weather conditions while attending lessons outdoors due to insufficient classroom space. During the rainy season, learning was often disrupted, while extreme heat equally posed challenges to concentration and comfort

The school, founded in 2016 through community initiative, began with modest facilities and a small number of learners. Over time, enrollment steadily increased as parents recognised the importance of foundational learning. However, infrastructure growth did not keep pace with the rising number of pupils, leading to congestion and the use of makeshift learning spaces. The new ECDE classroom is therefore expected to ease pressure on existing facilities and create a structured environment that promotes effective teaching and learning.

Education experts consistently emphasise that Early Childhood Development Education forms the bedrock of a child’s academic journey. Research shows that children who access quality early learning environments develop stronger cognitive, emotional and social skills, which positively influence their performance in later years. A secure classroom setting fosters curiosity, builds confidence and nurtures discipline—qualities that remain critical throughout the schooling cycle.

County education officials noted that the government has prioritised ECDE infrastructure as part of its broader development agenda. They explained that the devolved system of governance places ECDE under county administration, making such investments both a constitutional responsibility and a strategic necessity. By expanding classroom capacity, the county aims to enhance enrollment rates, reduce dropout risks and improve overall learning outcomes.

During his address, Governor Kachapin reiterated that infrastructure alone is not enough without community support. He urged parents to play an active role in ensuring consistent school attendance and in safeguarding their children’s welfare.

Particular concern was raised over the involvement of young learners in gold mining activities within parts of the region.

While acknowledging that artisanal mining remains a significant economic activity supporting many households, the Governor stressed that children should not be exposed to its inherent risks. Unregulated mining not only poses safety hazards but also disrupts education and contributes to environmental degradation.

He called for responsible practices and adherence to regulatory frameworks to ensure that economic pursuits do not undermine children’s rights or long-term development.

Community leaders echoed these sentiments, noting that the future prosperity of Marich Pass and the wider county depends on investing in human capital. They emphasised that education remains the most sustainable pathway out of poverty and that short-term economic gains should not compromise long-term opportunity.

Earlier in the day, Governor Kachapin inspected the ongoing construction of the Marich Fresh Produce Market, a flagship economic infrastructure project at approximately 70 per cent completion.

The modern market facility is expected to transform trade in the area by providing farmers and traders with an organised, secure and weather-resistant environment for conducting business.

For years, traders have operated in informal settings, often exposed to unpredictable weather and lacking adequate storage facilities. Post-harvest losses have been a persistent challenge, particularly for perishable goods. The new market is designed to address these issues by offering designated stalls, improved sanitation, storage space and better organisation of trading activities.

Farmers expressed optimism that the facility will increase efficiency and improve access to buyers, ultimately stabilising incomes. With agriculture forming a central pillar of the local economy, the market is projected to stimulate economic growth not only in Marich but also in surrounding areas. Enhanced market access is expected to encourage increased production, value addition and stronger linkages within the agricultural value chain.

The Governor described the education and market projects as complementary investments aimed at holistic development. “When we build classrooms, we invest in our children’s future. When we build markets, we strengthen livelihoods and empower families economically. Both are critical if we are to achieve sustainable growth,” he said.

Observers note that linking social and economic infrastructure is essential for long-term transformation. Improved educational facilities equip learners with knowledge and skills, while enhanced economic platforms create opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship. The synergy between the two fosters resilience and reduces dependency

Parents who attended the commissioning ceremony expressed gratitude for the new classroom, describing it as a relief after years of makeshift arrangements.

Teachers at the school equally welcomed the development, stating that structured classrooms will enhance lesson delivery, improve learner engagement and promote better classroom management.

Education officials further revealed that plans are underway to construct additional ECDE classrooms across other parts of the county to address similar infrastructure gaps. The county government, they said, remains committed to equitable distribution of resources, particularly in rural and marginalised areas where educational facilities have historically lagged behind demand.

As the event concluded, community members reflected on the journey from learners studying under trees to occupying newly constructed classrooms. The transformation, they noted, symbolises progress made possible through collaboration between government and citizens. It also highlights the importance of sustained investment and strategic planning in addressing developmental challenges.

Meanwhile, anticipation continues to build around the completion of the Marich Fresh Produce Market. Traders look forward to operating in a modern facility that enhances safety, organisation and efficiency. Once completed, the market is expected to attract increased commercial activity, generate employment and strengthen revenue streams within the county.

The commissioning of the ECDE classroom and the near-completion of the market underscore the county administration’s broader vision of improving livelihoods through targeted infrastructure development.

By prioritising early learning and economic empowerment, the government seeks to create a balanced development framework that addresses both present needs and future aspirations.

As Marich Pass witnesses tangible signs of progress, residents remain hopeful that continued investment will further transform their community. With improved classrooms nurturing young minds and a modern market poised to energise trade, the area stands on the threshold of renewed opportunity and growth.
