West Pokot basketball stars eye international slots at Kasarani trials

Isaac Siwareng and Terry Chepkorir, two promising basketball players from West Pokot County, are attending national basketball trials at Kasarani Gymnasium following their impressive performances this season.

Siwareng, formerly a student at Mnagei Secondary School in West Pokot County, was identified by basketball referee and coach Koech Limo, who facilitated his transfer to Emining Secondary School in Baringo County.

He has since become a key player for the school team, helping it register several victories in various competitions.

Terry earns national call-up

Terry Chepkorir, also from West Pokot County, has been invited to the ongoing trials.

She is a student at Butere Girls Secondary School and plays for the school’s first basketball team, which competes in major school championships.

During school holidays, Siwareng and Chepkorir train with other players at the SGR grounds in Makutano Town to sharpen their skills.

According to basketball referee and coach Koech Limo, the trials will continue until the end of the week, when the final squad will be selected.

“Those who qualify will be able to travel to Egypt and Azerbaijan for further training and competitions,” said Koech.

He expressed confidence that both players have a strong chance of making the final team because of their consistent performances.

Developing talent

Koech said his vision is to improve basketball development through better coaching, modern training methods, sports science and proper nutrition for players.

He noted that his training programmes focus on passing, shooting and footwork, which he described as fundamental basketball skills.

“As the County of Hidden Treasures, I urge leaders, stakeholders and sports fans in West Pokot to continue supporting and nurturing talented players so they can realise their full potential,” Koech said.
