Washington Kirui commands early lead in Bomet KNUT vice-chair opinion poll

A new independent opinion poll among KNUT-registered teachers across Bomet County has placed Mr. Washington Kirui, a seasoned scholar and master’s degree holder,in a commanding lead over his rival, Walter Cheruiyot (popularly known as Kipkembun), in the race for Vice-chairperson.

The incumbent Cheruiyot has faced growing criticism from educators who accused him of prioritizing political interests over the welfare of teachers.

In contrast, Kirui’s candidacy has been widely praised as a breath of fresh air, professional, merit-based, and rooted in integrity and service.

The survey, conducted between October 22 and 25, 2025, sampled 402 teachers across the four subcounties of Bomet Central, Bomet East, Chepalungu, and Konoin, through both phone and in-person interviews. The poll carries a margin of error of ±3.1 percent.

Results show that in Bomet Central, Kirui, ftom Kiplabotwa Comprehensive School, leads with 73 percent against Cheruiyot’s 27 percent, with respondents commending his humility, academic excellence, and professionalism.

In Bomet East, Kirui enjoys 75 percent support compared to Cheruiyot’s 25 percent, as teachers highlighted his mentorship spirit and issue-based leadership.

In Chepalungu, Kirui commands 70 percent support while Cheruiyot follows with 30 percent, with respondents describing Kirui as a principled and people-driven leader with a strong focus on teacher welfare.

Meanwhile, in Konoin, Kirui maintains a lead of 68 percent against Cheruiyot’s 32 percent, despite the latter’s deep local connections, signaling Kirui’s growing grassroots appeal across the county.

Countywide, Kirui’s overall support stands at 71.5 percent, while Cheruiyot trails at 28.5 percent, within a ±3.1 percent margin of error.

Analysts attribute Kirui’s popularity to his calm, scholarly, and visionary leadership style that resonates with teachers seeking professionalism and inclusivity in union affairs.

“Teachers appear to have embraced Washington Kirui’s calm, scholarly, and visionary style of leadership,” said a local analyst.

He added: “His emphasis on professionalism, inclusivity, and progressive engagement stands in sharp contrast to the old-style politics that have long characterized union leadership.”

The latest poll places Washington Kirui as the clear favorite for the KNUT Bomet Vice Chairperson seat.

His blend of academic insight, integrity, and teacher-centered leadership continues to inspire confidence and optimism among teachers across Bomet County.
