KNUT official decries tough KPSEA and KJSEA exams, says candidates overwhelmed

Bomet KNUT Treasurer Peter Rono has raised concerns that KPSEA and KJSEA exams are beyond learners’ capabilities, citing poor alignment between curriculum content and pupils’ learning levels.

Bomet KNUT Treasurer, Peter Rono, has expressed concern that the KJSEA and KPSEA examinations are too difficult and not aligned with the learners’ abilities.

He specifically highlighted mathematics at grade six, stating that the content is well beyond the learners’ level.

Rono argued that the exam papers, including the grade nine national assessments, are too challenging for the students.

He emphasised that some subjects, particularly Creative Arts—which covers Music, Art and Craft, and Physical Education—are being assessed even though students have not received adequate instruction in these areas.

“These subjects are not at the level of these students,” he said, noting that many of the teachers handling them are university graduates who did not specialise in these subjects during their training.

He further observed that P1 teachers, who have the foundational expertise in teaching these subjects, were not given the opportunity to teach the students.

According to Rono, this has created a mismatch between the students’ abilities and the curriculum, leaving learners struggling to cope with the assessments.

“It is now evident that the learners are unable to tackle these subjects effectively,” Rono said, calling for a review of both the examination content and the allocation of teaching responsibilities.

He stressed the need to align the curriculum with the pupils’ capabilities and ensure that teachers with the appropriate skills are allowed to teach the relevant subjects.

The KNUT treasurer’s remarks come amid growing concerns among educators and parents about the preparedness of students to meet national examination standards, highlighting the importance of teacher specialization and curriculum relevance in improving learning outcomes.
