Vihiga County’s Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) have made a strong impression at the 98th Kenya National Music Festival, with learners posting remarkable performances across several competitive categories.
The festival, running from August 1 to 14 at Kibabii University in Bungoma County, has brought together talented performers from across the country to showcase their artistic abilities and creativity.
Three Vihiga VTCs, Senende, Hambale and Boyani, have emerged among the top performers, securing leading positions in a number of categories.

Senende VTC delivered an outstanding performance, clinching position one in two categories: Adaptation and Arrangements of “Pop” Tunes and Melodies of African Gospel Music and Zilizopendwa from Kenya, 2006 to date.
Hambale VTC was equally impressive, securing position one in Tenor Solo and Pop Song, while finishing second in Soprano Solo and Bass Solo.
At Boyani VTC, the Kiswahili Solo Set Piece Verse, “Ulimwengu,” secured position one, while the English Solo Set Verse, “I Will Sing You a Beautiful Song,” finished third.
The strong showing by the three institutions underscores the growing role of VTCs in identifying and nurturing talent while equipping young people with skills that extend beyond technical and vocational training.

The festival is being held under the theme, “Enhancing the Creative Economy Through Knowledge, Skills and Artistic Production for Sustainable Development,” highlighting the link between skills development, artistic expression and economic empowerment.
Vihiga’s impressive results have consequently placed its VTCs firmly in the spotlight, demonstrating that vocational institutions are not only centres for technical skills development but also important platforms for nurturing creativity and supporting Kenya’s emerging creative economy.
