Utumishi Girls fire: Suspects reveal motive behind alleged arson attack

CCTV footage reviewed by investigators reportedly shows individuals moving near the Meline Waithera Dormitory shortly before the fire that claimed 16 lives at Utumishi Girls Academy.

Seven suspects linked to the recent dormitory fire at Utumishi Girls’ have reportedly disclosed details surrounding the incident, shedding light on what investigators believe may have triggered the attack.

According to preliminary accounts shared with detectives, the suspects cited growing frustration with the school administration’s decisions as the primary catalyst.

Among their grievances was a sudden change in the examination timetable, with reports indicating that the examinations were moved forward from June 16 to June 2, a shift that allegedly caused discontent among some students.

The suspects also raised concerns over a cultural event that required financial contributions from students, which they claimed placed additional pressure on learners already struggling with school-related expenses.

Investigators further noted claims of external influence, with reference made to a neighbouring boys’ school that had recently experienced student unrest, allegedly contributing to heightened tensions.

Three hours

Security investigations suggest that the decision to set fire to the dormitory may have been made approximately three hours before the incident occurred.

CCTV footage reportedly reviewed by detectives shows individuals obtaining matchboxes and paraffin shortly before the blaze, which broke out at around 12:10 a.m.

Authorities believe the alleged use of paraffin points to possible assistance from individuals outside the school environment, raising suspicions that the act may have involved more than the seven suspects currently in custody.

This has prompted further investigations into whether additional accomplices were involved in planning or executing the arson.

Law enforcement agencies have confirmed that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals linked to the incident.

Meanwhile, security has been heightened within the institution as investigations continue, with authorities emphasizing the need to fully establish the circumstances that led to the destructive fire and ensure accountability for all those involved.
