The University of Nairobi (UoN) has claimed Kenya’s top spot in the 2026 Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), securing 1,425th place globally out of 21,291 universities.

This positions UoN within the top 6.7% of universities worldwide, highlighting its growing international presence.

The 15th edition of the CWUR report, released on June 1, 2026, ranks the University of Nairobi first in Kenya and 37th in Africa, with an overall score of 68.4.

The university performed particularly well in research output and graduate employability, two key indicators of real-world relevance.

Its global research rank of 1,371 underscores the expanding international reach of its research, while a graduate employability rank of 1,596 confirms the competitiveness of UoN alumni in a demanding job market.

Reflecting on the achievement, Vice Chancellor Prof. Eng. Ayub Gitau said, the University of Nairobi’s inclusion in the 2026 CWUR World University Rankings affirms its growing global stature in research excellence and graduate impact.

“This recognition reflects the dedication of our faculty, researchers, staff, students, and alumni in strengthening the University’s reputation,” he said.

Prof. Gitau emphasized that the milestone sets the stage for the next phase of growth: “Our focus will be on deeper collaboration across faculties, stronger internal cohesion, and faster translation of research into societal impact. We have the talent and legacy to advance further among leading global universities.”

The CWUR rankings evaluate universities across four pillars: education quality (25%), graduate employability (25%), faculty distinction (10%), and research output (40%). This year, 81 million outcome-based data points were analyzed. Globally, Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Stanford University topped the list, while in Africa, the University of the Witwatersrand, the University of Cape Town, and Stellenbosch University led the continent. Makerere University was the strongest performer in East Africa, followed closely by UoN.

The 2026 CWUR Global 2000 rankings, published by the Center for World University Rankings, provide policy advice, strategic insights, and performance analysis to universities and governments worldwide.

UoN’s latest ranking underscores its continued investment in academic excellence, research, and graduate success, reinforcing its role as a leading institution in Kenya and beyond.
