The University of Nairobi (UoN) has entered into a strategic partnership with Huaqiao University in a move expected to strengthen academic collaboration, digital innovation, and cultural exchange between Kenya and China.
The agreement was formalized during a high-level meeting at the University of Nairobi, where Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof Leonida Kerubo, representing the Vice Chancellor, hosted a six-member delegation from Huaqiao University led by He Chunzheng.
Speaking during the reception, Prof. Kerubo described the partnership as a significant milestone in the university’s efforts to expand its international presence and deepen global academic cooperation.
She highlighted the UoN’s longstanding reputation as Kenya’s premier institution of higher learning and revealed that the university is currently undertaking a comprehensive digital transformation aimed at modernizing operations and increasing its visibility across Africa.
To ensure this partnership delivers measurable outcomes, the deputy VC proposed the immediate establishment of dedicated sub-committees within each faculty to oversee implementation of collaborative programs.

Founded in 1960, Huaqiao University operates campuses in Quanzhou and Xiamen and functions under the United Front Work Department of the Chinese Communist Party. The institution was established with a mission to serve overseas Chinese communities and international students.
Leading the delegation, He Chunzheng underscored Huaqiao University’s growing international profile, noting that the institution hosts more than 30,000 students from over 80 countries. He also highlighted HQU’s recognition as a “Double First-Class” university, a prestigious designation granted to leading higher education institutions in China.
The collaboration is expected to leverage the complementary strengths of both universities. While the University of Nairobi brings extensive research expertise through its specialized institutes, Huaqiao University contributes internationally recognized programs in engineering, materials science, chemistry, and business studies.
HQU’s expansive global network which includes partnerships with more than 3,000 universities worldwide and strong performance in the QS Asian University Rankings is anticipated to create new opportunities for Nairobi students and faculty through joint research, academic exchanges, and cultural programs.
Beyond academics, the partnership is also expected to enhance student life and intercultural engagement. Huaqiao University is known for its vibrant campus environment, which includes more than 100 student clubs and library collections exceeding 4.6 million volumes.
