Kakamega School assistant football coach Enock Lucheveli will remain at the institution after his request to transfer to Kibabii School was rejected by the Western Region Regional Director of Education.
Lucheveli lodged the transfer request on August 23, 2026, citing security concerns and alleged threats to his life, which he linked to tensions surrounding the fierce rivalry in school football.
The application, however, was turned down over technicalities relating to the transfer request. The security concerns cited by Lucheveli were also reportedly not sufficiently substantiated to warrant the transfer.
School football rivalry intensifies
The development comes at a time when rivalry among leading school football teams in Western Kenya has intensified, attracting large numbers of supporters and heightened emotions during matches.
Kakamega School is among the region’s traditional football powerhouses, with its encounters against fellow leading schools, including Musingu High School, often generating considerable interest.
Lucheveli’s case has consequently raised questions about the welfare and security of teachers and coaches attached to schools participating in high-profile competitions.
Despite the rejection, Lucheveli is expected to continue working at Kakamega School, leaving the coach and the institution to navigate the challenges surrounding the highly competitive school football environment.
The episode has also renewed calls for schools and education officials to put stronger safety measures in place during major sporting fixtures to protect players, teachers, officials and supporters.

No decision has been announced indicating that Lucheveli will leave Kakamega School, meaning he remains at the institution as the football programme continues.
