The Regional Director of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) for Nakuru and Baringo counties, Rosemary Kimani, has urged principals of all TVET institutions to fully cooperate with the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) during the ongoing census of TVET institutions.
Speaking during the national launch of the 2026 Mapping and Census of TVET Institutions Data Collection Exercise held at Waterbuck Hotel in Nakuru City, Kimani said the 2026 Mapping and Census of TVET Institutions marks a major step towards strengthening planning, policy formulation and resource allocation within the Technical and Vocational Education and Training sector.
“The exercise seeks to generate a comprehensive geo-referenced database of TVET institutions across the region, covering both public and private institutions. The data collection will focus on enrolment, staffing, infrastructure, training equipment, accessibility, research and innovation activities, industry partnerships and institutional financing.” She noted
According to Kimani, the Government continues to recognise TVET as a critical pillar in advancing the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) through the development of skilled human capital for industrialisation, innovation, entrepreneurship and job creation.
She added that the State Department for TVET has continued to implement strategic reforms aimed at improving access, quality, relevance, inclusion and employability within the sector.

The reforms, she said, include the implementation of Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET), expansion of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), strengthening industry linkages, greening of TVET curricula, virtualisation and digitalisation of training, infrastructure expansion, and promotion of innovation and entrepreneurship within institutions.
“For these interventions to achieve the intended impact, accurate and up-to-date data is essential. This mapping and census exercise will therefore provide the Government with critical evidence to guide infrastructure development, staffing decisions, programme expansion, funding allocation, and identification of underserved areas and emerging skills needs,” said Kimani.
She called on TVET institutions in Nakuru and Baringo counties to accord KNBS teams full cooperation and provide the required information to ensure smooth implementation of the exercise.
Kimani said the successful implementation of the exercise will significantly strengthen the Government’s capacity to plan and invest strategically in skills development, while positioning the TVET sector to respond effectively to labour market demands and national development priorities.
The event was attended by Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) Director-General Dr Macdonald Obudho, Economic Planning Secretary Samuel Gakuru, and KATTI National Chairman Shadrack Tonui, among other guests.
