The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has completed the shortlisting of teachers for the 2026/2027 promotion exercise, with more than 70,000 teachers selected to compete for 34,016 available vacancies.
The Commission received more than 160,000 applications by the August 10, 2026 deadline for promotion opportunities across primary schools, secondary schools and Teachers Training Colleges (TTCs).
The shortlisting exercise was conducted using a merit-based system, with applicants assessed against several criteria, including the number of years they have served in their current grade, Teacher Performance Appraisal and Development (TPAD) scores, academic and professional qualifications, as well as disciplinary records. According to the Commission, the system was used to generate merit lists for the 30 advertised promotion cadres.
The shortlisted teachers have been invited for interviews, with the exercise having commenced on Monday, August 31, and scheduled to run until Friday, September 11, 2026. The interviews are being coordinated by TSC Regional, County and Sub-County Directors.

TSC has begun notifying shortlisted teachers through SMS sent directly to their registered mobile phone numbers. However, teachers who have not received an SMS have been advised not to panic, as official merit lists have also been shared with TSC Sub-County Directors. Applicants have therefore been urged to visit their respective TSC Sub-County Directors’ offices to confirm whether they were shortlisted.
The promotion exercise is expected to provide career progression opportunities for thousands of teachers amid continued calls for the Commission to prioritise teachers who have served for long periods in their current grades.

A total of 34,016 promotion vacancies are available across the advertised cadres, making the ongoing interviews a highly competitive exercise.
