The value of a father in a child’s education and life

  • Fathers play a critical role in nurturing character, confidence, discipline and academic success among children.
  • Male teachers and father figures often provide guidance and mentorship that extend far beyond the classroom.
  • Father’s Day offers an opportunity to celebrate the men whose sacrifices and leadership continue to shape society.

As we celebrate Father’s Day, it is important to pause and reflect on the immense role fathers play in shaping not only their children’s lives but also the future of society. A father’s responsibility goes far beyond paying school fees. He is a mentor, guide, protector, disciplinarian, counsellor and role model. Through his presence, values and leadership, he helps nurture character, confidence, resilience and academic success.

Research consistently shows that children who have engaged and supportive fathers are more likely to perform well in school, exhibit positive behaviour and develop higher self-esteem. Fathers help children understand the value of hard work, responsibility and perseverance—qualities that are essential for success in education and life.

The renowned educator and philosopher John Dewey observed that, “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” Fathers play a crucial role in helping children experience this education beyond the classroom through daily guidance and example. Many people can readily identify practical lessons they learned from their fathers that continue to influence their lives today.

Similarly, psychologist Urie Bronfenbrenner, whose work focused on child development, stated: “Every child needs at least one adult who is irrationally crazy about him or her.” For many children, that adult is their father—a source of unconditional support, encouragement and belief.

A father’s encouragement often becomes a child’s confidence. As author Reed Markham noted, “The quality of a father can be seen in the goals, dreams and aspirations he sets not only for himself but for his family.”

Supporting children without fathers

For children who lose their fathers early in life, the presence of a caring uncle, grandfather, older brother, teacher, coach or guardian can be invaluable. Such father figures help fill the gap by providing guidance, protection and emotional support. Communities thrive when responsible men step forward to mentor and nurture the next generation.

Equally, children raised by single mothers deserve positive male role models who can offer mentorship, guidance and encouragement. While single mothers make tremendous sacrifices and often carry both parental responsibilities, the presence of a responsible father figure can complement their efforts by helping children develop confidence, discipline, identity and healthy social relationships.

It truly takes a community of caring adults to raise well-rounded and successful children.

As the African proverb reminds us, “It takes a village to raise a child.”

On this Father’s Day, we must also recognize male teachers. They are fathers both at home and, in many ways, in the schools where they serve.

Every day, they guide learners, instil discipline, inspire dreams and model responsible adulthood. Their influence often extends far beyond the classroom. Many successful individuals remember a male teacher who believed in them when they doubted themselves.

Educational leadership expert Dr. James Comer famously said, “No significant learning occurs without a significant relationship.” Male teachers help build these relationships, creating environments where learners feel valued, supported and motivated to succeed.

They help shape learners into responsible citizens, nurturing not only academic excellence but also character, integrity and resilience.

A biblical perspective on fatherhood

The Bible places great importance on the role of fathers.

Ephesians 6:4 teaches: “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” This verse reminds fathers that their role is not merely to provide materially but also to nurture, teach and guide.

Proverbs 22:6 further encourages parents: “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” The foundation laid by a father often influences a child’s choices and achievements throughout life.

Likewise, Proverbs 20:7 says: “The righteous man walks in his integrity; his children are blessed after him.” A father’s character and leadership become a lasting inheritance for his children.

Fathers: Unsung heroes and leaders

As we reflect on Father’s Day, we are reminded that fathers are leaders whose impact extends far beyond their homes. They shape families, schools, communities and nations.

Their wisdom builds character, their encouragement builds confidence, their discipline builds responsibility and their love builds secure and successful children.

In many ways, fathers deserve recognition for their quiet sacrifices, steadfast leadership and commitment to nurturing future generations.

To all fathers, father figures, grandfathers, uncles, guardians and male teachers: thank you for your sacrifices, guidance and unwavering commitment to raising and mentoring the next generation.

Your efforts may not always be celebrated, but they leave footprints on hearts and legacies that endure for generations.
