Teachers attending a meeting at Nyamasaria Primary School in Kisumu county have raised concerns over what they described as frequent and disruptive transfers by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), especially involving teachers nearing retirement age.

The educators led by Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Kisumu Executive Secretary, David Obuon, said the repeated transfers are affecting stability in schools and disrupting effective service delivery.

They argued that elderly teachers, particularly those approaching retirement, should be handled humanely and spared unnecessary relocations that may affect their well-being and productivity.

During the meeting, the teachers also expressed concern over the constant reshuffling of TSC directors in Kisumu, saying the frequent leadership changes have created uncertainty and slowed down the implementation of education programmes in the region.

The union officials called on the TSC to adopt a fair, transparent and considerate transfer policy that takes into account the welfare of teachers and the needs of schools.

They further urged the government to improve school funding, noting that many institutions are struggling financially due to delayed or inadequate capitation.

According to the union, insufficient funding continues to affect learning activities, procurement of teaching materials, and the smooth running of schools.

The meeting concluded with a call for stronger dialogue between teachers’ unions and education stakeholders to address the growing concerns facing the education sector.
