A man who is said to be a teacher has now confessed to murdering 21-year-old Ramogi Institute of Advanced Technology (RIAT) student Rose Apondi.
According to Kisumu County Police Commander Hillary Toroitich, the suspect confessed during interrogation at Maseno Police Station that he orchestrated the murder on April 5, 2026.
His motive was revenge after allegedly discovering WhatsApp messages on the victim’s phone indicating she was planning a future with another man.
In a calculated move, the teacher lured Apondi out of her residence under the guise of helping her secure an industrial attachment opportunity. Unaware of the trap, she left to meet him, marking the last time she was seen alive.
Investigations reveal that the suspect did not act alone, he enlisted the help of accomplices, allegedly paying them Sh500 to participate in the assault. The group fatally stabbed the young woman and dumped her body in a thicket.
What began as missing person report filed by her family on April 6 ended in a grim discovery on April 12. By the time officers recovered her remains, they were already decomposing and had been partially mauled by wild animals.

A major breakthrough in the case came when detectives tracked down Apondi’s mobile phone, which had been hidden in a septic tank at the Milimani Estate where she worked as a social worker. The recovery of the device provided the critical evidence needed to link her ex-boyfriend to the crime, leading to his swift arrest.
At the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, the victim’s family revealed disturbing details about her final hours.
Her sister, Dorine Achieng said she had received distressing WhatsApp messages from Apondi shortly before she vanished, claiming she had been drugged and gang-raped. However, Dorine noted that the messages were suspiciously long and coherent for someone claiming to be in such a state.
Alarmed, Dorine and her husband rushed the college to check on her, only to find her missing. Neighbors confirmed they had seen her in the area, but her whereabouts remained a mystery until the body was found. Dorine revealed that Apondi had previously confided in her about the toxic relationship, and she had urged her sister to leave for her own safety.
The suspect is expected to be arraigned at the Maseno Law Courts on April 23 for plea taking. As detectives continue to pursue leads to arrest the alleged accomplices, Apondi’s family is left demanding justice for a cruel and calculated act that has shattered their lives.
