Teacher commits suicide over high cost of living

A primary school teacher in Kisii County has reportedly committed suicide due to challenges occasioned by the hard economic times being experienced across the country.

According to the neighbors of the teacher who was also disabled, they alleged that the deceased was fond of complaining about the general challenges caused by the rise in the cost of living.

The late allegedly lived alone as he had separated with his wife three years ago.

Trouble started when he came home on Wednesday evening and locked himself in the house. He failed to open the house the following morning, prompting family members to make a follow up.

The family then forced the door open, only to find his body hanging in a sisal rope from the ceiling of the house.

Teachers from the area have been asked to share problems with their colleagues by opening up to them instead of killing themselves.

“Open up and share with your colleagues or any other reliable person to ease the tension in your minds and relax instead of thinking to commit evil,” said Pastor Julius Makori.

Hey was talking at Kerera in village in Nyamache Sub-county at the home of the teacher who committed suicide.

The police from Nyangusu moved the body to Nyamache Sub-county for autopsy and consequent investigation on the cause of the death.

The peculiar death in the area comes barely a month after another teacher from St Peters Keberesi Secondary in Kenyenya Sub-county took his own life over differences that emerged between himself and his wife.
