A student of Ober Secondary School in Rachuonyo East Sub-county of Homa Bay has confessed to burning down a school dormitory on August 29, 2022.
The student pleaded guilty before a magistrate in Oyugis Celesa Okore that he ignited the fire that ravaged Ksh2.6 million worth of property.
An estimated 176 students lost their academic materials to the inferno, causing them and the school to suffer serious financial loss.
The police had earlier arrested seven students who were alleged to have participated in burning down the dormitory while other students were in class. Later on, the main culprit confessed that he was the mastermind of the arson.
The student was arraigned on September 14 and did plead guilty to the principal magistrate.
“I regret my actions and I will never do it again. I beg to be forgiven,” said the student.
He claimed he committed the crime due to peer pressure and encouragements from his friends.
The judge ordered that he be kept under custody until his sentencing on Monday. He will also face an age evaluation in jail.
