A 15-year-old Grade 6 learner in Homa Bay County is sitting the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) from her hospital bed after giving birth to a baby boy just hours before the national assessments began.
The candidate was admitted to the labour ward at Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital on Friday evening. She later had a Caesarean section and delivered on Sunday night, shortly before the assessments began on Monday, October 26, 2026.
Hospital Chief Executive Officer Dr Vincent Oduor said both the mother and her newborn were in stable condition.
Despite her recent surgery and the demands of caring for a newborn, the learner is taking the assessment at the hospital under the supervision of Ministry of Education officers and health personnel. Dr Oduor said nurses at the hospital's newborn unit were caring for the baby while she continued with the assessments.(Education News Kenya — https://educationnews.co.ke/news/homa-bay-grade-6-candidate-sits-kpsea-from-hospital-bed-after-giving-birth)
The arrangement has allowed her to sit the national assessment without leaving the hospital while she recovers.
She is one of 40,821 candidates registered to sit KPSEA in Homa Bay County.
The case draws attention to the challenges facing adolescent learners who become pregnant while still in school, including the need for access to healthcare, psychosocial support and chances to continue their education.
