School in Murang’a bans casual leave requests, orders teachers to follow stipulated TSC rules

Kirenga Girls High School in Murang’a County bans informal leave requests, directing teachers to follow official TSC procedures to improve accountability and school operations.

Teachers at Kirenga Girls High School in Murang’a county have been directed to strictly follow formal procedures when seeking permission to be absent from duty, in line with Teachers Service Commission (TSC) regulations.

In an internal memo dated April 29, 2026, seen by Education News, the school principal, Mary Kariuki, announced that the institution will no longer accept leave requests made through phone calls or text messages. Instead, all teachers must submit written applications when seeking leave of absence.

The directive references the TSC Code of Regulations, which requires that any teacher unable to attend assigned duties must apply in writing to the head of the institution for permission to be absent.

The regulations further warn that absence without official approval may be treated as a serious breach of duty, attracting disciplinary action.

According to the memo, teachers must clearly indicate who will take over their responsibilities during their absence.

This move is aimed at ensuring continuity in learning and maintaining smooth school operations.

However, the administration has provided a provision for emergencies. In such cases, teachers who are unable to physically deliver their leave letters may send a scanned copy via WhatsApp to the school’s official number for documentation and filing.
