A sombre mood has engulfed Murany Village in Bomet East Sub-County after two young schoolgirls were allegedly assaulted in an incident that has left residents shocked and deeply concerned.
The victims, aged 10 and 6, are currently receiving medical care at Longisa County Referral Hospital following the ordeal, which reportedly occurred as they were returning home from school.
According to police reports, the girls, who are in Grade Three and Grade Two, were allegedly accosted by a man who lured them into a nearby maize plantation.
The incident came to light after the children arrived home visibly distressed.
Family members became alarmed and, upon questioning them, learned of the alleged assault.
The revelation sparked outrage among residents, who quickly mobilised and assisted police in tracing a suspect linked to the case.
Police have since arrested a 52-year-old man identified as William Kipkirui Sitonik.

He is currently being held at Longisa Police Station as investigations continue ahead of his court appearance.
Confirming the incident, Bomet East Sub-County Police Commander Michael Singa said the suspect was apprehended with the assistance of members of the public and remains in custody pending arraignment.
As investigations continue, attention has turned to the recovery and welfare of the two young victims, who are receiving medical and psychosocial support.

The incident has renewed calls for enhanced child protection measures, with residents urging parents, schools, and community leaders to strengthen efforts aimed at safeguarding children from abuse and exploitation.
