The government’s push to bridge the digital divide and expand access to technology in rural schools has received a major boost following the launch of a Sh62 million modernization project at Bogesaka D.O.K. Primary and Junior Secondary School in Nyamache Sub-County, Kisii County.
The project, funded by the M-PESA Foundation and launched by Broadcasting and Telecommunications Principal Secretary Stephen Isaboke, aims to create a modern learning environment equipped with digital infrastructure and advanced educational facilities.
The initiative will include the construction of ICT laboratories, science laboratories, modern classrooms, improved sanitation facilities and internet connectivity to support digital learning.
Supporting the digital economy
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, Isaboke said the project aligns with the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which seeks to create opportunities through digital inclusion and innovation.
“The implementation of these key milestones across Kisii County, spanning digitized educational infrastructure to solar-powered dairy milk coolers, demonstrates our steadfast commitment to actualizing the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda at the grassroots level,” said Isaboke.
He noted that expanding digital infrastructure in schools is critical in preparing learners for careers in the digital and creative economy.
“By cascading the Digital Superhighway infrastructure into primary and junior secondary institutions, the State Department is ensuring that the digital and creative economies envisioned under the BETA framework are fully accessible to rural youth, thereby fostering inclusivity and leaving no child behind,” he said.
M-PESA Foundation commitment
M-PESA Foundation Project Manager Eng. Zachary Hamptons said the investment goes beyond physical infrastructure and seeks to position learners for future opportunities.
“We cannot build the future of our nation using yesterday’s tools and therefore, this programme is not just about laying bricks and mortar but installing fibre-optic internet, building digital labs and equipping science rooms to ensure that we bring the digital economy directly to the learners of Bobasi Constituency,” he said.

The foundation will also equip the school with computers, furniture, laboratory apparatus and reliable internet connectivity to support the integration of technology into classroom learning.
Education officials said the upgraded facilities will help address longstanding infrastructure challenges and improve academic performance by providing learners with access to modern educational resources.
