Hundreds of students from various schools in Baringo county thronged the streets of Kabarnet town to participate in a cleaning and tree planting exercise to mark Mazingira Day on Thursday.
The exercise, led by the County Executive Committee Members (CECMs) for Environment, Health, Education, Tourism and Lands, and Urban Development, saw the students dispatched to various sections of the town and Kabarnet County Referral Hospital to participate in collecting litter.
CECM for Environment and Natural resources, Richard Tamar, lauded the primary and secondary schools which turned up for the noble cause.
He noted that the county aims at contributing to the presidential directive to plant 15 billion trees by 2030, and they have planted 1.5 million trees so far through efforts by individuals, corporate institutions and county staff.

Tamar urged locals to make cleaning the town a culture, to emulate countries like Rwanda, which boasts of having the cleanest cities in Africa.
He rallied the students to embrace hygiene and environment conservation initiatives to combat climate change.
CECM for Lands and Urban Development, Reuben Ruto, said that the county government was committed to ensuring that the town remains clean.
