- Makutano Catholic Parish Priest Fr. Leonard Kimosop has called on stakeholders to give greater attention to the welfare and development of the boy child.
- He expressed concern over the declining number of boys in schools and churches, saying the trend requires urgent intervention.
- Parents were also urged to support the holistic development of children through proper nutrition, education, socialization and spiritual growth.
The Makutano Catholic Church Parish Priest in West Pokot County, Fr. Leonard Kimosop, has urged all stakeholders to support the boy child, whom he said appears to have been forgotten.
Fr. Kimosop observed that since efforts to promote the girl child began several years ago, the focus on the welfare and development of boys has gradually diminished.
“Let all stakeholders use every possible means to save the boy child by encouraging and motivating him so that he upholds his self-esteem,” said Fr. Kimosop.
Fr. Kimosop noted that there has been a sharp reduction in the number of boys attending churches and schools, a trend he described as worrying and one that should concern all members of society.
“It is regrettable that there is a sharp reduction of boys in churches and in schools, and this should be a concern to everybody,” he said.
He made the remarks during a meeting for Playgroup and Grade 1–3 parents at St. Mary’s Assumption Catholic Primary School, Makutano, on June 19, 2026.
Holistic development of the child
During the meeting, Riwo Ward ECDE Coordinator Amina Chebitwei engaged parents on the importance of holistic child development.
Chebitwei said it is important for children to grow physically, mentally, socially, emotionally and spiritually.
On physical development, she urged parents to pay close attention to nutrition and allow children adequate time for play, especially between the ages of zero and seven years.
Regarding mental development, she encouraged parents to ensure that children get sufficient sleep.
For social development, she advised parents to allow children to interact freely with their peers both at school and at home.
On spiritual growth, Chebitwei urged parents to encourage regular church attendance to help nurture positive values and moral behaviour.
Chebitwei also emphasized the importance of maintaining a cordial relationship between parents and teachers for the benefit of learners.
She noted that regular communication between parents and teachers is essential in supporting children’s learning and overall development.

“Teachers offer professional value to the child, while parents should also strive to play their part by implementing their responsibilities,” she concluded.
