- Musingu Boys High School defeated rivals Kakamega High School 2-0 to book a place in the Kakamega County football final.
- First-half goals by Dickens Opiyo and Shaban Kwimba ended Kakamega High’s unbeaten defensive run in the tournament.
- The victory marks the third time in four years that Musingu have denied Kakamega High county football glory.
Musingu Boys High School once again proved too strong for rivals Kakamega High School after securing a 2-0 victory in the semi-finals of the Kakamega County Secondary Schools football championship at the Mumias Sports Complex on Saturday.
The Scorpions struck twice in the first half through Dickens Opiyo and Shaban Kwimba to book their place in the county final, where they will face the winner of the other semi-final between Butere Boys and Tande Secondary School.
The victory ended Kakamega High School’s impressive defensive run in the tournament.
Both sides had reached the semi-finals without conceding a single goal, setting the stage for a tense encounter between two of the county’s football powerhouses.
Fast start proves decisive
Musingu started the match aggressively and took control early, scoring two quick goals that destabilised Kakamega High and forced them onto the back foot.
The second goal, however, sparked controversy and briefly halted the match. Kakamega players and officials protested, claiming there had been a handball in the build-up to the goal.
The game was stopped for several minutes as the complaints were addressed before play resumed.
Despite trailing by two goals, Kakamega fought hard to get back into the match. However, Musingu’s defence stood firm throughout the second half, with the Scorpions throwing bodies on the line to protect their lead.
Mwinamo’s tactical masterclass
Under coach Brendan Mwinamo, Musingu displayed tactical discipline and resilience to see out the victory.
Mwinamo is well known in Kakamega football circles, having previously coached Kakamega High School and guided them to a national title.
Speaking after the match, Musingu players expressed confidence that this could finally be their year after several near misses at the national level.
Although the Scorpions have consistently produced strong teams, national glory has remained elusive.
Rivalry continues
The defeat was another painful chapter in Kakamega High School’s long-running rivalry with Musingu Boys.
Since 2022, Musingu have repeatedly denied Kakamega High opportunities to win county honours.
Saturday’s result marked the third time in the last four years that Kakamega High have fallen at the hands of the Scorpions in their quest for football supremacy in Kakamega County.

The rivalry has become one of the most anticipated fixtures in western Kenya school football, often drawing large crowds and producing highly competitive contests.
While Kakamega High remains one of the country’s most decorated school football teams, Musingu have increasingly emerged as the dominant force at county level.

With another victory secured, Musingu now stand one match away from reclaiming the county title and keeping alive their dream of finally lifting the elusive national trophy later this year.
