Riokindo Boys, Kereri High send students home as unrest wave continues

Students leave Kereri High School after the institution released learners as a precautionary measure amid concerns over possible unrest. School administrators are expected to communicate further guidance on the resumption of learning.

Riokindo Boys High School and Kereri High School have sent students home early amid concerns over possible unrest, becoming the latest schools in Kisii County to take precautionary measures.

According to Riokindo Boys Chief Principal Gerald Orina, the students were released on Saturday and parents were advised to pick them up from the institution.

A senior teacher at the school revealed that the decision was reached after consultations involving the School Management Committee and officials from the Ministry of Education.

Efforts by Education News to reach Kenyenya Sub-county Director of Education Gladys Zachary for comment were unsuccessful.

Students leave school

Education News observed many students leaving the school by boda boda early Sunday morning along the Kenyenya–Sengera–Ogembo road and the Kenyenya–Etago road.

The situation remained calm as learners made their way home.

Kereri High also affected

Kereri High School in Kisii Central also released its students after a neighbouring school closed and learners were sent home.

It could not immediately be established how long the students would remain at home, as school administrators had not communicated a return date by the time of publication.

Learning continues elsewhere

At Nyabisase DEB Secondary School, learning continued smoothly on Monday morning.

Chief Principal David Ogega held a consultative meeting with prefects on the way forward, urging learners to remain peaceful and committed to their school as they prepare for the scheduled Term Two mid-term break.

Schools remain on alert

The developments come amid heightened vigilance in schools across the country following a series of student unrest incidents and school closures reported in recent weeks.
