The National Biosafety Authority (NBA) conducted a tree-planting exercise at Kitulu Primary School as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives aimed at promoting environmental conservation and supporting the Government of Kenya’s target of increasing national tree cover.

Ms. Ruth Okong’o, who represented the Acting Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Ann Karimi, at the event, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to supporting learning institutions in growing more trees for fruit production and environmental conservation.

The event was attended by the Head Teacher of Kitulu Primary School, Ms. Sarah Mbui, and the Acting Assistant Chief of Ngiini Sub-location, Ms. Josephine Muema.

More than 1,700 indigenous trees and 300 fruit trees were planted at the school during the exercise.

Supporting the national tree-growing agenda

Ms. Okong’o emphasized the importance of tree planting in mitigating climate change, conserving biodiversity, protecting water resources, and promoting sustainable development.

She noted that the initiative aligns with the Government’s goal of growing 15 billion trees by 2032 in order to achieve at least 30 per cent national tree cover.

Students tasked with nurturing trees

The Head Teacher and the Acting Assistant Chief thanked the National Biosafety Authority for the initiative and highlighted the importance of environmental conservation.

To ensure the trees are nurtured and protected, each student was assigned a tree and encouraged to take responsibility for its growth and care.
