A 16-year-old form three student at Kenya High School, Joy Wanjiru Gathigia, has been found alive, bringing an emotional wave of relief to her family and the public after a tense six-week search that captured national attention.
Joy went missing on April 1, 2026, the day she was closing school for the Easter holiday.
According to the preliminary reports from her family, her brother, Denis Muhoro, picked her up from Kenya High School in Nairobi’s Central Business District at around 10:00am.
He later escorted her to the 2NK Sacco matatu stage, where she boarded a vehicle headed to Nyeri at approximately 11:00am.
Family members expected her to arrive home in Nyeri later that afternoon. However, she never reached her usual drop-off point at Skuta stage, located about three kilometres from Nyeri town. Instead, reports indicated that the vehicle proceeded directly into Nyeri town, a deviation that raised early concerns.
The uncertainty deepened when her belongings began to surface in different locations.
Her first bag was discovered near the Ragati River, while a second bag containing her school uniform was later found in Karatina near the railway station.
The discovery of these items prompted intensified search efforts and growing anxiety among relatives and residents.
CCTV footage later provided a partial but troubling timeline.
At approximately 6:37pm, Joy was seen in the Saigoni area near River Ragati, walking towards Karatina town while carrying a bag.
Just nine minutes later, she was captured again on another camera walking alongside an unidentified man in the direction of the Ragati River bridge.
This marked the last confirmed sighting before she disappeared.
As days turned into weeks with no breakthrough, search operations were coordinated in Karatina and surrounding areas.

The efforts were led by Nyeri railway location chief Dadson Ithiru alongside local administrators and security teams.
Joy’s disappearance sparked widespread concern across the country, with social media platforms amplifying calls for information and support in locating her.
Community members, leaders, and volunteers joined the search, reflecting the national anxiety surrounding her case.
Her mother, Esther Githigia, had earlier expressed deep distress over the unexplained circumstances of her daughter’s disappearance, particularly the conflicting travel and CCTV evidence.
After approximately six weeks, Joy has now been found alive. Her recovery has brought immense relief to her family and the public, who had followed the case closely since early April.
However, authorities have not yet disclosed full details regarding where she was during her disappearance or the circumstances leading to her recovery.
Investigations are ongoing as police seek to piece together what transpired between the last CCTV sighting and the moment she was found.
Security agencies are expected to question individuals who may help clarify the timeline, including the unidentified man captured on CCTV footage.
Authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation as investigations continue, saying that a detailed report will be released once all forensic, CCTV and witness evidence has been analyzed.
Meanwhile, Joy is reported to be safe and receiving appropriate care as she reunites with her family after the prolonged ordeal.
The case remains under active investigation as Kenya awaits answers to what happened during the six weeks she was missing.
