Kwale Governor reaffirms commitment to teachers’ sports as 2026 league kicks off

Kwale County Governor Fatuma Achani has reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to supporting the teachers sporting activities noting that sports play a vital role in fostering teamwork, discipline, and community cohesion.

Achani who made the remarks on Sunday, May 10, while launching the 2026 Kwale County Teachers League at the Kwale Stadium in Matuga sub-county, emphasized that teachers, as key drivers of social development, deserve platforms that promote their well-being and encourage active participation beyond the classroom.

“Teachers are the backbone of our social development. They deserve platforms that support their well-being and allow them to actively engage with the community beyond the classroom,” she said.

The Governor further announced that the county government will provide the necessary sports equipment and resources to ensure the smooth running and overall success of the league.

She highlighted that investing in sports is part of the county’s broader agenda to nurture talent and promote healthy lifestyles among public servants and the wider community.

Achani also lauded the efforts of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers Kwale branch Executive Secretary, Julius Mvurya, over his outstanding leadership in uniting teachers through sports and recreational activities that foster unity, teamwork, and overall wellness.

The Teachers League, which brings together educators from all sub-counties, is expected to strengthen collegial relationships and enhance morale within the teaching fraternity.

Mvurya expressed optimism that this year’s edition will attract more teams and deliver an exciting season of competitive sports.

He thanked Governor Achani for honoring their invitation to preside over the official launch, saying her presence demonstrated the county’s genuine commitment to uplifting the teaching fraternity.

He also commended the County Government for its continued investment in sports infrastructure, noting that the upgraded Kwale Stadium has positioned the region among the country’s leading hubs for sports development.

Mvurya said the Teachers League has grown not just as a sporting event but as a platform that strengthens relationships among educators across Kwale.

He noted that the improved facilities have enhanced the morale of teachers participating in football, volleyball, athletics, and other disciplines, turning the league into a highly anticipated annual event.

He added that beyond competition, the league promotes wellness and mental health, critical aspects for teachers who often work under intense pressure.

“Sports help us stay healthy, motivated, and connected. This league gives teachers an opportunity to bond, relax, and showcase their talents,” he said.
