The government is under pressure to release capitation funds to schools ahead of reopening next week, amid growing concerns that delays could disrupt learning and create tension between parents and school administrators.
Machakos senatorial candidate Dr Daniel Yumbya says the delay in disbursing capitation is placing school heads in a difficult position as they struggle to meet essential operational needs without adequate government funding.
Yumbya says the situation is increasingly creating disagreements between parents and school heads, with some administrators being forced to send students home for fees to keep schools running.
“When the government delays capitation, the burden is eventually transferred to parents and school heads. This is creating unnecessary tension and confusion in our schools,” said Yumbya.
Pressure on school heads
He said school heads should be allowed to concentrate on providing quality education rather than spending time dealing with financial challenges caused by delayed government funding.
“We cannot expect schools to operate normally when the funds they depend on have not been released. It is the third term and it is very short. Parents are already struggling, and asking them to fill the gap created by delayed capitation only adds to their burden,” he said.
Yumbya urged the government to release the funds before schools reopen to give principals and headteachers the resources needed to prepare for the new term.

“The government must act urgently and release the capitation before reopening. Our children should not be caught up in disputes between parents and school administrators because of a problem that can be addressed by timely funding,” he said.
