President William Ruto has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to digital transformation, describing technology as a cornerstone of efforts to improve public service delivery, strengthen accountability and enhance efficiency across government institutions.

Speaking on the progress of the government’s digitisation programme, the President said Kenya has witnessed remarkable growth in the number of public services available online.

According to him, the country has expanded from offering about 350 online government services in 2022 to more than 26,000 today, describing the achievement as a major milestone in the government’s drive to modernise public service delivery through technology.

The President said the rapid expansion has fundamentally changed how citizens interact with government by making it possible to access thousands of essential services online.

He noted that many Kenyans can now apply for government documents, make payments, submit applications and receive services through digital platforms without travelling long distances or spending hours in queues at public offices.

Improving efficiency and accountability

Ruto said the digitisation programme is designed to simplify government operations while improving convenience for citizens.

By replacing manual procedures with integrated digital systems, the government aims to reduce paperwork, shorten processing times and deliver faster, more reliable services across ministries, departments and agencies.

According to the President, digital platforms have also strengthened revenue collection by ensuring government revenues are received through secure and traceable electronic payment systems.

He said the shift has helped minimise revenue leakages while improving financial accountability.

The Head of State added that the move towards cashless government services has also reduced opportunities for corruption by creating clearer audit trails that make transactions easier to monitor.

Investing in digital infrastructure

The government has accelerated investments in digital infrastructure, including expanding internet connectivity, upgrading government information systems and integrating services across public institutions.

These initiatives are intended to create a seamless experience for citizens while improving coordination among ministries, departments and agencies.

Digitisation is increasingly becoming central to service delivery in sectors such as education, healthcare, immigration, taxation, transport, business registration and social protection.

The government believes that expanding online access will improve efficiency, reduce administrative costs and make essential public services more accessible to citizens across the country.

Driving Kenya’s development agenda

President Ruto said technology will remain a key pillar of Kenya’s development agenda, with continued investment planned to strengthen digital infrastructure and broaden access to online government services.

He maintained that embracing innovation is essential to building a modern public sector capable of responding effectively to the changing needs of citizens while supporting sustainable economic growth.

Experts have observed that successful digital government programmes can improve transparency, reduce bureaucracy and enhance service delivery when supported by robust digital infrastructure, strong cybersecurity systems and improved digital literacy.
