There was jubilation at Tala Township Primary School in Matungulu Sub-county as ICT teacher Augustine Nzuki was honoured ahead of his departure to Shenzhen, China, for a global Artificial Intelligence (AI) training programme under the UNESCO-CODEMAO Youth Coding Initiative.
Mr Nzuki is among four teachers selected from Africa and has been named the leader of the African delegation for the Asia-Africa exchange programme. He will represent Kenya, Machakos County and Tala Township Primary School during the week-long training.
The initiative aims to strengthen young people’s capacities in artificial intelligence and programming, promote international exchange and collaborative learning, and support the development of an inclusive digital education ecosystem.
Scheduled to run from July 19 to 26, 2026, the programme will bring together selected teachers and students from Kenya, China, the Republic of the Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Namibia and Thailand.
Participants will take part in innovation workshops, institutional visits, intercultural exchanges, collaborative project development and dialogue sessions with fellow educators and young innovators.
Speaking on Friday after the farewell ceremony at the school, Nzuki said the selection process was highly competitive.
“I am embarking on this tour to learn and engage with CODEMAO, a group in China known for industrialisation in AI and digital literacy. Only two teachers and four learners from Kenya qualified. From China, I expect to bring back AI knowledge and visit sites where AI is greatly utilised,” he said.
Officials from the Ministry of Education, teachers and students joined the school community in bidding him farewell.
School celebrates achievement
Matungulu Sub-county Director of Education Lilian Gitahi described the selection as a great honour for the school, the sub-county, Machakos County and Kenya.
“This will be of great benefit to our students and teachers,” she said.
Acting Headteacher Phyllis Sila said the school was proud to have one of its teachers selected for the international programme.
“He is innovative and integrates ICT skills into learning for both students and teachers. We expect him to bring back new ideas,” she said.
School President Louis Matoke described Mr Nzuki as instrumental in advancing ICT learning at the school.
“This milestone is a source of pride for Tala Township and a motivation to many of us,” he said.
