Police in Kisii County are investigating the death of a Form Three student from St Mary’s Nyamagwa Girls School in Sameta Sub-County, who died during the holiday.
According to the Police report, the student was found unresponsive in bed at her aunt’s place in Nyamache Sub-County, where she had been staying. Relatives said the girl moved to her aunt’s home after her mother died, leaving her under the care of her father and other siblings.
When contacted for comment, school Principal Hellen Nyaberi said less as she was stunned by the sudden death of her student who was on this short April holiday.
The preliminary reports further state that the student was discovered early in the morning on Saturday unconscious on her bed by family members, who rushed her to Nyamache Sub-County Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Early police investigation revealed that the girl might have committed suicide for unknown reasons as she never left any suicide note behind. Officers said they are still pursuing all leads and have not ruled out other causes of death.

The body was moved to Christamarine Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem and toxicology analysis to establish the exact cause of death. Police have recorded statements from Principal Nyaberi, teachers, and family members as part of the investigation.
Officers appealed to the public and the school community to remain calm and allow investigators to complete their work. “We are waiting for the post-mortem report and toxicology results to guide the next step,” one officer said.
Education officers and teachers moved to the deceased’s home at Kiong’ong’i to condole the family. Community health workers, the church, and the area chief also went to offer psychosocial support to family members.
The incident comes as schools are set to reopen for second term next week, with parents raising concerns over student safety, mental health support, and health monitoring both in school and at home.
When Education News reached the deceased’s class teacher at Ogembo town for comment, he eulogised her as a quick learner who grasped Mathematics concepts quickly with ease and wished her soul to rest in peace.
