The Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) Kathiani Sub-County chairman and Mitaboni Boys High School Principal Joseph Nzioki has urged parents to be positive role models for their children, emphasizing that the behaviour and actions displayed at home play a significant role in shaping young people’s character and future.
Speaking during a prize-giving ceremony at Mitaboni Boys, Nzioki noted that children closely observe their parents and often imitate what they see in their daily lives.
He said parents have a critical responsibility in nurturing discipline, responsibility, and moral values among learners.
“Many children watch their parents very closely. The actions and behaviour of parents greatly influence their lives and the kind of people they become in the future,” said Nzioki.
He stressed that discipline begins at home, contrary to the common belief that it is primarily the responsibility of schools.
According to Nzioki, teachers can only reinforce values that children have already been taught by their parents and guardians.

He called on parents to create peaceful and supportive home environments where children can grow with proper guidance and encouragement. He also urged them to closely monitor their children’s friendships and remain actively involved in their academic and social lives.
“Know the company your child keeps, be aware of their whereabouts at all times, and monitor any behavioural changes. This will help you address any inappropriate influences before they become serious problems,” he said.
The KESSHA official further challenged students to remain disciplined, stay focused on their education, and show respect to both their parents and teachers.
He noted that strong collaboration between parents, teachers, and learners is essential in promoting academic excellence and responsible behaviour among students.
