A section of parents of students at Sacred Heart Ng’araria Girls School in Kandara Sub-county, Murang’a County have raised concerns over a remedial programme fee introduced at the institution, with some alleging that the payment requirements are causing tension between families and the school administration.
According to several parents, the school is requiring learners to pay a remedial fee reportedly ranging between Ksh3,000 and Ksh3,500 per term. Some parents claim the payment enforcement measures have made it difficult for students who have not fully cleared the levy.
One parent, who spoke on social media, appealed to the Ministry of Education to intervene, alleging that some students face restrictions linked to unpaid balances.
“To make matters worse, there is now a gate pass system being used to enforce these payments. If a student hasn’t cleared the levy, they are restricted,” the parent claimed, further alleging that some learners are sent home over outstanding balances shortly after reporting to school.

However, other parents have defended the school administration and Principal Dr Agnes Ngure, saying the institution has recorded notable academic and co-curricular progress under her leadership.
Goretti Gachathi said the remedial fee agreed upon by parents was Sh3,000 and not Sh3,500 as alleged in some complaints.
Another parent, identified as Juma Ndambuki, praised the school’s leadership, saying the institution had improved academically while also nurturing disciplined and confident students.
David Ndung’u also supported the programme, stating that the remedial initiative was introduced following consultations with parents who agreed to support additional learning for students.
Efforts to obtain an official response from the school administration and education authorities were ongoing by the time of publication.
