- More than 400 education stakeholders have arrived at Kisii University for a two-day conference aimed at reviewing CBC implementation and government progress in the education sector.
- VC Nathan Ogechi has said the conference has, for the first time, brought together local scholars, diaspora experts, teachers’ unions, school heads and student leaders to jointly assess the sector.
- CS Julius Ogamba is set to preside over the meeting, with resolutions from the conference to be forwarded to the Ministry of Education for policy consideration.
Kisii University Vice Chancellor Prof. Nathan Ogechi has confirmed the arrival of more than 400 education stakeholders for a major education conference to be held at the university.
Speaking to Education News on Tuesday, Prof. Ogechi said the delegates will take stock of what has been accomplished by the government in the education development sector in the region, adding that all preparations, including security and accommodation, have been put in place for the two-day high-level meeting. “We are not going to talk what we think but what has been researched by our own educationists and our brothers from the diaspora who have taken their good time and they will present a well-balanced report to be debated,” he said.
Prof. Ogechi termed the conference a special one, noting that for the first time it has brought together local scholars, diaspora education experts, university dons, teachers’ unions, school heads, parents’ representatives and student leaders under one roof to candidly assess the education sector.

He said the essence of the conference will be to re-evaluate the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) in the region and suggest the best ways forward for the system. “We are going to fine-tune the curriculum, which has been successfully supported by the ruling government, which we support,” he said.
The conference, convened by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, who will preside over the meeting, will run for two days until Friday, featuring paper presentations, panel discussions and breakout sessions on teacher preparedness, infrastructure, funding of CBC and transition challenges.

The meeting follows another of its kind that was spearheaded by the then Kisii County Education Board, whose objectives and resolutions, residents say, were not implemented for unknown reasons. Residents now hope that this time round the resolutions will not gather dust on the shelves but will be fully implemented to transform education standards in the Gusii region. The VC added that resolutions from the meeting will be forwarded to the Ministry of Education for policy consideration.
