- Nyamira County ECDE teachers have called off their strike after reaching an agreement with the County Government on key grievances.
- The County Government has committed to signing a Recognition Agreement with KUNOPPET and adjusting salaries in line with SRC recommendations.
- The County has agreed to convert all ECDE contracts to permanent and pensionable terms by July 1, 2027, with teachers directed to resume duty by September 22.
Nyamira County Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers have ended their strike following a breakthrough meeting with the County Government.
The industrial action was called off on Sunday, September 21, 2026, after a meeting between the County Government of Nyamira and officials of the Kenya Union of Pre-Primary Education Teachers (KUNOPPET), Nyamira Branch, held at the Governor’s Boardroom on the instructions of Governor H.E. Amos Kimwomi Nyaribo.
According to a statement from the Office of the Governor, the two sides reached an agreement addressing the key grievances that had pushed the teachers to down their tools. KUNOPPET had tabled three main demands: that the County Government sign a Recognition Agreement with the union, that it deduct union dues and remit them to the union, and that ECDE teachers be paid salaries as recommended by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

In the resolutions agreed upon, the County Government said salaries for all teachers employed on permanent and pensionable terms had already been adjusted in the September 2026 payroll. The County also committed to signing a Recognition Agreement with KUNOPPET and to begin deducting and remitting teachers’ union contributions upon completion of all statutory processes.
In a major win for teachers serving on contract, the County Government agreed to convert all ECDE contracts to permanent and pensionable terms by July 1, 2027.
Following the deal, all ECDE teachers have been directed to report back to their respective stations by Tuesday, September 22, 2026. The statement was signed by the Office of the Governor, Nyamira County, bringing to an end the standoff that had paralysed learning in ECDE centres across the county.
