President William Ruto has stopped the proposed development of the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Kilungu campus at its current location, citing inadequate space and concerns over the suitability of the site, and has directed that a larger piece of land be found.
According to KMTC, the President issued the order during his development tour of the South Eastern region on Saturday, October 24, 2026. The college said the proposed campus and student hostels should not proceed at the existing site because of space limitations and concerns about the suitability of the existing structures.

The decision leaves local leaders and government planners with the task of identifying a suitable alternative site before construction can proceed. The relocation changes the location of the project and does not cancel plans for a KMTC campus in Kilungu.

The proposed location was found unsuitable for the scale of infrastructure needed for a fully operational medical training college. Such a campus requires space for classrooms, laboratories, administrative offices, student accommodation and recreational facilities, and room for future expansion. Rather than abandon the project, the government has directed the relevant leaders to find a bigger site within the region.

In discussions before the directive, KMTC officials met Kilungu Level 4 Hospital, which is expected to be a partner for clinical placements and practical training. The replacement site will therefore need to offer enough land for academic buildings and hostels while keeping practical links with healthcare facilities.

The next step will be the identification and approval of a suitable alternative site, after which the project's development plans can be reassessed. The source does not give a timeline.
