Teachers across the country marked World Teachers' Day in high spirits at the Kasarani Gymnasium on October 5th, buoyed by President William Ruto's firm commitment to finalise the long-awaited Career Progression Guidelines (CPG) within two weeks.

The national celebrations, which brought together thousands of educators to honour their role in nation-building, quickly turned into a moment of renewed optimism as the President addressed one of the most pressing issues in the teaching profession.

For years, teachers have decried stagnation and uncertainty in career advancement, with the CPG seen as the critical document to unlock clear pathways for promotion and professional growth. The President's two-week timeline has therefore been received as a breakthrough, with teachers now keenly awaiting implementation.

"The finalisation of the CPG will be a game-changer for career advancement," a teacher who attended the celebrations said, echoing the general mood at the venue.

However, the push to collapse the 2025-2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) into a two-year cycle is yet to gain traction. While teachers are advocating for the compression to allow them to benefit faster from its provisions, the President noted that the proposal remains under consideration and did not commit to a timeline.

Unlike the CPG, which now has a definite deadline, the fate of the CBA proposal will depend on further consultations between the government, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and teachers' unions.

As teachers return to their workstations, all eyes are now fixed on the presidency to deliver on the CPG promise, a move that could redefine career progression and restore confidence in the profession's growth structure.
